What makes our material unique?

EVO2™ is a patented, shock absorbing material with an outer layer that diverts the energy from a fall or hit. The material is normally soft and compliant, but upon impact, the outer layer changes into a hard shell to spread the energy across an inner honeycomb layer thus protecting the user from injury.

How can our material be used?

There is a wide range of applications when it comes to our patented material. Our initial focus, however, is on personal protective products that retain the dignity of the user. Our products are everyday wearable and non-stigmatizing, everyday effective and protective. Our first product is the SMARTY®, which is designed to protect the brain. The Hip Defender™ is currently in the development stage.



Our technology is quite simple. You cannot stop someone from falling. The probability is that at some point, a fall will happen. Wearing the SMARTY® may significantly reduce the consequences of a fall. We have created a product to mitigate the effects of a fall. We take a great deal of the force that would normally go into the brain, resulting in injury, and shunt it over a range of dynamic polymers. The impact resisting system used in SMARTY®relies on the patented combination of a honeycomb and dilatant material (U.S. Patent 8,087,101 and Canadian and European patents). In the case of a fall, the impact causes the soft dilatant material to immediately change to form a hard shell that spreads and shunts the forces over the honeycomb matrix. It then returns to its normal condition for additional protection.

Honeycomb Cells

Honeycomb cells are a natural shock absorbing structure, they contain 90% air. The cells are tunable so they can be easily manipulated to be made thicker, thinner, longer, smaller, harder, softer, or with more sides to them. Therefore, we can predict in advance how they are going to behave, allowing the ability to fine-tune the honeycomb cells and dilatant using finite element analyses, and other methods. This allows them to absorb the impact during a fall in a highly predictable manner.

Advanced Biomechanical Laboratory for Injury Reduction and Rehabilitation

At Alba-Technic, we work closely with world-class scientists to advance our research efforts. Alba-Technic, LLC assisted in creating the Advanced Biomechanical Laboratory for Injury Reduction and Rehabilitation at the University of Maine, which features an ASTM guided 20 foot drop test for protective headgear testing along with linear impactor for National Operating Committee on Standard for Athletic Equipment testing. The lab also incorporates advanced capabilities for materials analysis and 3-D printing of critical components. (All testing performed at the Advanced Biomechanical Research Lab for Injury Reduction and Rehabilitation at the University of Maine at Orono.)
